Just an Idea below to open discussion..
This experiment illustrates how the medium through which a vibration travels can change the way we perceive sound. In this case, a bow string (or any vibrating string) is used in three different setups:
1. Vibrating Through Air
When the string vibrates in open air, it creates pressure waves that propagate through the air. These waves reach your outer ear, cause your eardrum to vibrate, and are processed by the inner ear. This is the typical “air conduction” pathway that most of our hearing relies on. The quality and volume of the sound depend on how efficiently the vibrating energy is transferred from the string into the air.
2. Vibrating with Contact on the Forehead
When the vibrating part of the bow is connected to the forehead, the vibrations are directly transmitted into the skull. The bones of the skull then conduct these vibrations to the inner ear—a process known as bone conduction.
How It Differs: Because the sound bypasses the outer and middle ear, the frequency response can change. Often, higher frequencies are reduced, and the sound may seem “muffled” or different in timbre.
Real-World Application: This principle is used in bone conduction headphones, which allow you to hear sounds without blocking your ears.
3. Vibrating with Contact on the Arm/Hand Near the Ear
When the bow is connected to the arm or hand and then held near the ear, the vibrations travel through soft tissue and bone in that region.
Transmission Path: The conduction here is partly through the soft tissues (skin, muscle) and partly through the bone. Soft tissues tend to dampen and filter the vibrations differently compared to the rigid skull.
Perceptual Impact: The sound might be quieter or altered in tone because the coupling isn’t as efficient or uniform as direct bone conduction on the forehead. The damping effect of the softer tissues can lead to a loss of some of the vibrational energy, particularly at higher frequencies.
Summary
In each scenario, although the source of vibration is the same, the medium through which the sound energy travels affects both the efficiency of transmission and the quality of the sound:
Air Conduction gives a clear, standard sound as our ears are tuned for airborne waves.
Bone Conduction (forehead contact) transmits vibrations directly to the inner ear but with a different frequency balance, often reducing higher frequencies.
Tissue/Bone Conduction via the Arm/Hand shows that softer tissues alter the vibration even more, usually leading to a softer, slightly distorted sound. This experiment not only demonstrates the basic physics of sound propagation but also helps explain why different hearing devices or methods (like bone conduction headphones) work the way they do.

Just try it once, not only interesting but compels you to think & play around the reasons..as why this is happening!
This seems a funtastic simple Science experiment , something to do each with sound, wave, medium including Amplitude & frequency of the wave.. each time new medium is uded
Yes.. Try the Experiment, observe for change in Amplitude as well frequency of the waves!
Does it relate to frequency
the medium through which the sound energy travels affects both the efficiency of transmission and the quality of the sound:
How aound wave transmit with different conduction medium?
Relates to medium of conduction
