Will Robots Replace Live Dolphins in Aquariums? #shorts
#marinemammals #dolphins #robotics
Engineers and programmers believe robotic dolphins can replicate the unique connection that happens when people see real life marine mammals like dolphins and sea otters. A marine biologist watches and reacts to footage of the robotic dolphin and explains what it REALLY means, not just for aquariums and conservation, but also for science and conservation.

Full disclosure, I do work with marine mammals who are under human care. These aquatic animals have all been deemed non-releasable by federal agencies such as the Department of Fisheries Canada and the Fisheries Department of the NOAA in the US. The reason why they are non-releasable, and why robotic dolphins will not free any dolphin or whale living in a zoo or aquarium, is because these marine mammals lack the skills to survive in the wild. Either they suffered debilitating injuries that required rescue and rehabilitation, they were rescued at too young of an age and became dependent upon humans, or they were born under human care. Regardless, the outcome is the same. A vast majority of the marine mammals under human care lack the skills to survive in the wild and cannot be safely released without a significant risk to themselves and to humans.
For these marine mammals, such as sea otters and dolphins, the alternative to living under human care is euthanasia. And in my opinion, this is not an option.

Yes its better to put robot. Not animals. Let all the animals in the cage to become free.
Of course, this man is going to promote what he does. He would get paid for doing a service. He would first of all get paid for building the animal…big money, then he would most likely get the contract for maintaining the animal…more big money. Imagine how many "Big monies" he would get if he did this in multiple places. He would be accused of being a "Big money" hoarder. (Very wealthy) Also, I would hate to see the reaction of the child that goes by an exhibit to see his favorite robotic dolphin (unbeknownst to the child) with its head opened up or taken off for maintenance. I could imagine a few nightmares in that scenario.
Zoos and aquariums have a lot of reasons for existing. Doing things this man's way, what would you do with the animals that are considered un-releasable for various reasons? Zoos and aquariums also do research that will play a part in protecting and preserving nature. For instance, there is problem with tumors among the wild Tasmanian Devils in Australia. The Australian Reptile Zoo is doing all kinds of research to find out what is causing the tumors and try to prevent them in the wild. There is also a feline issue in wild bobcats and cougars in Florida called FLM. The Florida Wildlife Commissionโs vets and biologist along with zoos have been working tirelessly through research to try to find out why cats are becoming wobbly, paralyzed and disoriented and even dying in the wild. This couldn't be done in the zoo with Robots. You need live subjects. If we did it this man's way, to help wildlife, you would have to have the live subjects on hand (MONEY) and the robotic animals for entertainment (MONEY)? This wouldn't seem cost effective at all.
I jokingly say, "Let the captive animals work for their supper." Food, healthcare and research aren't free. So, the animals should show up, get treats, be cute, get people to pay to see you so money can be earned, and research can be done to take care of you and your wild brothers and cousins. While I believe that sanctuaries are great, they don't do a lot for the animals that are still in the wild. Sanctuaries only protect the ones at hand.
Sorry it's long but I am so tired of people bashing zoos, aquariums and wildlife parks. People are trying their best to do what's right for the animal. Do they get it wrong sometimes? of course. Should they stop trying by going robotic? definitely not.
No, they wonโt replace animals in zoos and aquariums. Most of the animals living in captivity (at least where I am – Iโm not in the USA) are there because they canโt be released back into the wild, sometimes because of their health issues, sometimes behavioural issues.
Those animals deserve to be cared for, loved and treated with respect.
I think the robots are a nice idea for the average person to be able to get up close and learn about the animals but not to replace them entirely
"Robots"will be DANGEROUS in the near future…..trust me.
There is an essence to life that a mech/robot or even taxidermy or wax figures can't simulate. That's why taxidermy and wax figures are so creepy.
