Land Rover Discovery Or Range Rover L322 Twin Test | Which Should You Buy?

Today on Buckle Up Rob and Jasper find out what’s the better used buy, an L322 Range Rover or a Discovery 3. With used prices of the full range of L322 trims and engines overlapping that of Discovery 3s and 4s this is actually a comparison that makes sense, but we’re sure the comments will tell us we’re just being silly.

Up against rivals such as the BMW X5, Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, Mercedes Benz GLE, Lexus LX, Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Armarda, Honda Pilot, BMW X7, Audi Q8, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Sierra, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Rolls Royce Cullinan, Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes Benz GLS we know a JLR product is a good punt, but which one to go for?

  1. The Disco 3 is the perfect backup car because it has 7 seats, massive loading space, pulls trailers well, and even goes offroad well whilst also being comfortable and it's pretty cheap.

However if you do that you better agree with the agendas of the British Government because CO2 tax is your biggest expenditure for this car. Backpack typically does around 2k miles a year. It's ยฃ750 per year road tax so that's 2000 37.5 pence per mile add in fuel duty it's about 10p per mile. So 47.5 p per mile on tax alone. You might be better off with a horse and wagon.

  2. Two different cars Range Rover is more luxury with the discovery designed to be more utilitarian. Also you have used a more modern l322 which a discovery 4 is more comparable to. And I had a little chuckle when you said you prefer the 3 which is less Chelsea than the 4 lol then mentioned the grill as one of the reasons, thatโ€™s not a standard grill ๐Ÿ˜‚

  3. The range rover l322 4.4 tdi engine is a ford engine. When ford first brought land-rover from bmw first thing their did was get rid of the 6 cylinder 3.0 engine.

The disco 3 2.7tdi engine is a French engine. It wasn't designed to.go i.to a heavy 4×4. You will kill the crank if you start towing horse boxes or car trailers .

I run a 3.6 l322 2008 with 265,000 miles now. I use it as my work vehicle. Being a 3.6 it has now dpf fitted. Egrs have been blanked and she has stage one map. Went from luton to Birmingham and back and got 39 mpg.

  4. Having owned a Disco 4 for a year now, Iโ€™m convinced it is peak SUV. The Odyssey was perfect when the kids were little, but now, the functionality, off road capability, towing capacity and road trip comfort make it peerless. Perhaps one day Iโ€™ll get to drive the new Disco, the Defender.

  5. Had both the Disco 3 and 4, both suffered broken cranks at approximately 120,000 and I changed the oil every 5000 miles but I suspect that before my ownership they may of been neglected service wise. Own a TDV6 2005 Range Rover now but did prefer the practicality of the Disco, looks so much better and still looks modern, plus 7 seats but Iโ€™ll never own another one for the crank issue has cost me serious money. Itโ€™s a shame they didnโ€™t put the TDV8 in the Disco like the RR Sport. Iโ€™ve still got my Disco 3 and if I could transplant the engine from my Range rover to my Discovery 3 I would in a heartbeat.

  6. I'm so glad I found this video bc I'm trying to decide between these two right now for off-roading, camping, in NM in the States and carrying my Dog (a 3 year old english mastiff) around for the 2-3 days a week.

  7. You can buy one of these if you like to spend lots of money. As a former JLR employee I owned a L322 for some years. It was the most comfortable ride and the best vehicle for long range journeys ever, but at the same time – even for me working for the company – the most expensive car to keep ever. And once the car gets older the chance of an expensive repair will naturally rise. Ever repaired the air-suspension system on the LR ? Or exchanged a TDV8 engine. I loved the car but in the end the growing cost for servicing and maintenance forced me to sell it.

  8. Between them itโ€™s totally down to prefrans personally i would stick with my RANGE ROVER but discos are equally good. But Iโ€™ve found for my uses the Range Rover smashes it and i feel very loyal to it let alone the experience of operating one. Also the fact i can have a V8 also is a win for me.

  9. Great video, thanks. However I did notice that you had road tyres on the Disco – they look like all-season road tyres to me. They look the same that I have on my X-Trail and I almost got stuck in a muddy field recentley (overflow car park in a country hotel) where I had all four wheels turning with no forward or backward movement. Luckiiy I switched on the diff-lock and, with a lot of sliding, I did manage to get out (just) without getting my feet muddy. The ideal tyres are all-terrain if you are driving mainly on road with some off-road as they will cope with most situations (and what I plan to put on my X-Trail next time).

  10. Only recently found your channel.. Love your enthusiasm for anything to do with cars! your content is always interesting with brilliant banter between you all and very well put together… keep it coming..

  11. had to watch the whole video to see if there an apology for those trousers! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ had both a disco 3 and now a L322 TDV8 4.4. Engine in the L322 is different gravy but the practicality of the disco is hard to beat that being said there are things about the L322 that are more practical like it is easier to clean the interior (especially the rear where dirt gets in and under the seats) and the way the rear seats roll forward is great. I have put a leisure battery in mine and plan to camp in it etc. Such a great car to live with and the most relaxed/ comfortable ride ever plus incredible stereo all for 10k! can't beat them ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. Disco 3 will be recognized as a legend at some point. Best vehicle I've ever owned. I've had 4 LRs.. defender, d2, classic rr, Lr3 4.4 V8 petrol (probably the most reliable LR engine ever). They do everything – high speed luxury tourer, van, people carrier, tow rig. They work very well in real off road situations too.. You may have problems with a 98 corolla but a 2cv or an old Citroen GS on high setting might do it.. did the cameo mall crawler hit anything underneath?
