The effectiveness of that system is determined by a combination of the driver’s skill, the line being attempted, and the particular vehicle dynamics settings used. For example, early in the video one Land Rover struggles when all 4 tires must overcome rocks simultaneously and from a stand still, even though it is configured in Manual shift 1st gear, with DSC off, and using Rock Crawl mode. When the driver corrects the line, the results improve. Pay special attention to a moment when “extended height” is triggered after becoming hung up on a large rock beneath the chassis or a control arm; when that condition is detected, the electronic air suspension activates it’s highest setting in order to clear the obstacle. This is indicated in the center display on the dash, and the driver is able to reverse and recover without aide from another vehicle.

  3. As you said 4:53 the terrain response uses wheel speed to determine its response. It needs some wheel to be turning. To get moving you need to 2 foot drive the car. Hold it on the brake and load the TC by setting an engine speed for good torque, on the 2.7 TDV6, that's 440nm @1900rpm, 3.0 SDV6 211hp is 520Nm, 3.0 SDV6 256hp is 600Nm at 2000 rpm, 4.0V6 346 Nm at 3000 rpm and the 4.4 is 425 Nm at 4000 rpm. Then while holding the revs, use the brake like a clutch, allowing the torque to come on the wheels, hold the revs, you'll feel the car testing the traction, then it will start to climb.
    Driving with TR is a totally different technique to driving older Land Rovers. Try to keep constant revs and regulate speed with the brakes keeping the system loaded and balanced with both feet.
    The gasoline engines lack the torque of the diesel but when I took a V8 off road last year I was impressed with how it laid the power down, it didn't feel like it was missing the 100Nm that my D4 has on the same tracks.

  4. Ya that is kind of strange, maybe more gentle and steady throttle. Lr3's typically crawl pretty slow up stuff. You can improve the ETC system by flushing the brakes and running a good high quality brake fluid. The GAP ID tool has a brake flush procedure that supposedly gets all the fluid in the abs distribution module.

  5. Nice video! I need to get better ones of mine and my flexed out D2๐Ÿ˜‚ so I think in rock crawl the problem can sometimes be it cuts so much throttle you have to pretty much almost floor it LOL otherwise I like to do manual second because then I feel if it's not too steep of an obstacle the higher gear is okay but obviously it's going to get you a little more motion with that limited throttle. The D2 has manual mode also but it doesn't have a stability control like DSC it only has traction control which works good and you can't shut it off you don't really even need to. I love shutting off DSC and still having traction control I just wish it would shut off fully. I love the D3 and the D4 but I hate that with the more advanced traction control you then simultaneously get the independent suspension lack of articulation๐Ÿ˜‚ for example my D2 traction control is very effective but not nearly as much as the newer type yet I have so much Flex that I just keep Wheels on the ground regardless so it kind of equals out if not ends up better at least on those Rocky conditions. Before getting into off-roading I never knew how important articulation was other than it looks cool but it is dramatic. When I built my suspension up for more articulation it was like I had went to larger tires or got a locker but same tires nothing different but suspension. It's dramatically better. I really really wish there would be a way to retrofit modern Rover traction control on Old solid axle rigs๐Ÿ˜‚ or perhaps Land Rover will come to their senses someday and offer one solid axle vehicle again or even ifs with a solid rear. The new Defender is nice but it's really a shame for the heritage of what it's representing for it to just turn out like a Range Rover and a discovery underneath. I suppose some people drive on terrain that it doesn't matter but it really really does. Not everything has to be a Rolls-Royce on the road๐Ÿ˜‚
