Japan was so far ahead in humanoid robots for decades, and now their best look ancient compared to the best from the US and China…
Tesla and Unitree are at least 2-3 years ahead at this point, and they also have the AI advantage, Japan has nothing in this field (they will most likely pay a US or Chinese company for an AI model to use on their robots).
Let's not even start discussing the costs and manufacturing capabilities. They will never compete with the US and China at this pace.
The first demo was actually done over 20 years ago in Japan. I have seen it on TV. They let the robot worked with an one man workshop with the owner. But the function was just to pick up object and walk when paired with a human. The design of the robot was very basic and not fancy. It relied on human interaction and not autonomous.
China's Zhiyuan Robot Company, Lingxi 2 Robot, can ride a bicycle, they can do what people can do, through observation and learning, anything can be done..
