Everything Wrong with my Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6 – April 2025 – Land Rover Drive
A walkthrough with my Land Rover Discovery 3 and all it’s current faults.
At the time of filming I have owned this car for 11 years and 2 months. A full review will come later but I thought a fault update would be nice.

Ah, the dreaded tin worm. I hope you manage to sort it all out soon Simon.
Not bad considering the age , your harsh winters and the fact you actually go off roading, you hear about the bad rep on LR/RR , most of the work is just a general tidy around the body of the car.
keep on !
My old Discovery 3 2006 TDV6 had over 400 000km, but a lot of rust under the plastic that you talked about. I recommend to begin with the rust. I have now upgraded to the Discovery 4, these are great cars, but its important to use some kind of antirust treatment :)
And again a nice video!
These are special vehicles, and we need to keep them going.
134K miles on my 2007 V8. Its taken lots of mechanical preventative maintenance, and it keeps going. Chasing a driveline knock that I suspect might end up being the rear locking diff after replacing the rear propshaft and completely renewing the gearbox mechatronix.
Bought the Landy in California and the first owner lived in Nevada, so i had the same issues with clearcoat failing on the roof, bonnet and sections above the rear most windows.
Check right below driver and passengers windows, as clearcoat in that area is prone to also fail. Common issue on LR3 and 4.
Land Rover over-engineered the terrain response and suspension but seemingly couldn't be bothered with thicker/better quality clearcoat.
Get those cracks in your seats filled, recolour the seats and reseal them. Your next stop is the leather tearing, and then you're in for a world of fun.
LOVE THE CONTENT, KEEP IT COMING!
Great video Simon. Good luck with all of the upcoming repairs.
Please tackle the rust first.
Fantastic car , get it fixed .😊
Hi thanks for sharing. You are a lucky one, I think. My greatest concerne on Discovery 3 is the engine ( turbo, broken crankshaft).
3:40 water outlet. replace it, before it ultimately splits. Have you already had a transmission flush? Mine is at 236k and desperately needs it. Hard upshifts from coasting, slight rev flux, judder beginning on high loads / low rpm/speed.
Hah I thought only mine did all that stuff :) thanks for sharing.
The ladder frame rust are the most dangerous. It rust like crazy in the lower half part of where the rear drive shaft goes through the frame out to the wheels.
Watch L R Time 😊
My sills were in far worse state man and I'm far less skilled than you when working on a car but I've welded mine up very well and have held up well. I'm a plumber so not a tool noob but still :P
Good luck with the coolant leak……I had the same, leading to serious overheating. Top thermostat housing replaced. No difference. I have just changed the bottom thermostat, but originally sent the wrong part, as it had an extra spout. That has been done, no leaks so far, but heater not working now
Had the engine rebuilt on my 2007 in 2018, replacing it with a second hand Jaguar s-type TDV6, and guess what it needs another rebuild. One day perhaps if I can find the cash, until then it is a driveway oriment
I think Simon you need to address the rust before it spreads to areas that will need serious repair, in texas we never put salt on our roads in winter actually the state shuts down schools close many people don't go to work like they do in northern states in winter they never close or run late everything open, best place to buy old vehicles is down south like Texas and Arizona, I bought my 04 D2 from arizona no frame rust no rust on anything, my question is how long you going to keep your lr3 and how is your project going 😊
Well done. Keep it going…
Almost 300k km on my 2005 (owned since 2017). Same rust issues on the sills, a wheel bearing and EPB dead, currently. It's been used and abused, but also very well maintained, and it has never left me stranded in the 200k km I drove it, through >20 countries. Cheers!
Good luck with the rust repairs. There will always be more to it that you can see.
I've wanted one of these for so long but always talk myself out of it courtesy of the horror stories plaguing the internet. Videos like yours give me some hope. I mean if it's lasted this long, they've gotta be not completely terrible, right?
I know a guy with 280,000 miles, that's 450,000km on his 2004 Disco 3. I know they get a bad rep but all cars have faults. Maintenance is key as with anything
