A Great Introduction to Japanese Sums
Here’s where you can try Power Up! By TheAsylm: https://sudokupad.app/hMpJGmdHJ6
Normal sudoku rules apply. Colors used in this puzzle are Black and Red. For best results, remove all unshaded marking you’ve done once complete. Japanese Sums rules: the squares outside the grid indicate the order of the contiguous runs of cells found in that row or column that must be shaded the color of the clue. The number inside the clue gives the sum of the cells in the run. There must be at least one unshaded cell between runs of the same color, but there is no need between runs of differing colors. All runs are given.

21:56 for me
At 7:42, I don't understand why the 22 and 23 clues must include red cells in Row 3. I got those same squares red, but from the 30 clue, not from the 22 or 23 clues.
19:07
Really nice straightforward introduction to the type.
That was confusing: I thought, red is like shaded and grey is like unshaded. So, all in all, I tried to do it with two colours, thinking that a run meant two neighbouring cells in a column or line. Very confusing. And wrong
40:55. Slower than I'd've liked (as a lover of Picma puzzles) but there was plenty of interesting logic in there so the solve felt very satisfying.
very frustrating, since midway thru, i could see the picture it wanted me to draw, it fit perfectly, but logically, i wasn't allowed to draw it yet XD
29:10 on my 5th attempt. Failed 4 times first.
I give this puzzle a 1UP! My time was 22:49, solver number 4278.
It took me 64:31, but this is the first of this puzzle I've been able to complete so I'm happy with it! I like nonagrams, but this is always much harder because of the variable lengths of each color section.
Power up, mario mushroom.
Hope you do more Japanese sums puzzles! I LOVE Picross and this scratches that itch well (since it's the same idea)
The PowerUp is the white-red mushroom, that SuperMario can eat to get bigger.
picross!!
๐
It took me a second here (@18:46) why the 4 couldn't be on the right.
[I had the 4 in two places in there]
But I see now .
If a grey cell is below that gray 3 clue, it would have to be a 1or3, so the "grey 4" is on the left.
Immediately, though, that "gray 3" clue can't come down with grey next to the gray 4.
So the "3" is up in the corner in there.
Ramifications for the grey 3 in other words.
Yay me again ๐
It's a mushroom from Mario! Great solve!
I think the puzzle is a mushroom, from mario.
They Power Up Mario
It's difficult to see the image with all the numbers, but if you zoom out it becomes much clearer
Solved this using a symmetry theorem, which turned out to work. (Left and right sides).I have no idea what I would have done if it hadn't solved this way.
34:32 for me. Been a while since we've had one of these types.
What a big challenge. Fantastic puzzle.
I completed the puzzle but no idea what the picture is. I assume it's meant to finish with a picture…
Red 6 7 and 4 standing by!
32:06 Why canโt R8C5 join up to R8C7 to make 9? Could be 5-3-1 I think?
12:43 for me. Great puzzle!!
i feel like i grew with this puzzle
56:14. Really fun puzzle, would love to see more of these :)
Always fascinating to solve this ruleset for me who played both Sudoku and Nonogram ๐
38:14 for me. Loved this rule so much !
I thought it was a light bulb ๐ก
The picture is clearly a light bulb glowing
35 minutes
The quality improvements on Mark's videos are so welcome! Looks great
Took 31 mins for the shroom to take effect. >.>
it's a mushroom from Mario bros
It's like another Japanese puzzle game callled Nonogram.
22:21 finish. With the way the image is squared off, I'd say that it looks most like the mushroom from the US version of Super Mario 2. Love picross, and is always fun to mix it with sudoku. Excellent!
This being one of my first real attempt at a puzzle with this rule set made me take a little bit to comprehend the rules but once I did this puzzle was great fun
Super Mario mushroom that makes mario/luigi big
