Be prepared for the long winters with lots of snow. Will need snowplows tractors. Saws to cut trees for for wood burning heater. . I have been watching Home Free Alaska! (There are these washer dryer combo's that is a all in one machine. that I seen other off grids use.) Blessings ๐
I love Jackery! I have two – but can barely charge it in the winter because the sun is too low on the horizon compared to where I am. Works amazing in summer! I agree with comment below – get a gas dryer to get you through the winter :)
Have you talked with some Amish for offgrid tips? Having a 12volt tool battery light system might be good in a pinch.
Solar is great here in the summer because we have a literal endless supply of daylight, but winter is a different ballgame since we only get about 5 hours of daylight, and most of that is overcast. Also, climbing on top of an icy roof after a snow storm to sweep off solar panels is probably the suckiest job of all jobs ๐ I would definitely bring your generator for wintertime power usage if you guy's are planning to stay through winter.
You must have a friend or family discount to install that transfer switch. We have one and the eletric an wanted $800,00 to install it. And I can'tell see you spending that kind of $ for a temporary set up. If you can perhaps you can send some my way!!!
Fresh clothes builds morale!
That looks like a really nice system. It would take me a month of Sundays to drain that battery with our minimal power usage! ๐ Thanks for sharing! I'm looking forward to seeing it in action! -Dusty
but how will you account for the lack of sunlight during the time of year you may need it the most?
Hi guys interested in sunny mountain if your selling
Sweet! We've been running our temporary seacan home(we are building a cabin) on a Jackery 1500 for almost 4 years now. We have had to replace some panels, but customer service was good. I wish they had had bigger ones available at that time. Washing and drying off grid is a dream goal…we are still visiting the laundromat.
Donโt they get like 0 hours of daylight in the winter time? Do you have a plan for winter time?
When will you leave this one?
back in the day, My Mom use to save her rinse water in 5 gallon buckets to use for the wash water on the next load.
Awesome option for solar Aust
I could use this in city. Electric getting very expensive.
For laundry, search for "pedal powered washing machine." People have created dozens of versions using old washing machines.
I wish we lived near you guys, so we could learn hands on all that you do! When I have my own homestead I will definitely be referencing to all your videos. Thanks for the videos!
Propane/electric dryer? Combo
We have that same speed queen washer!! Speed Queen is the best, not changed their systems for years.
Are you going to have a washer/dryer combo at your cabin?
In my off grid set up it could power me for 6.6 hours in grey mode, if it just fridge/freezer 47hrs. I hope you are going to put a full-size solar power system, at least the $9k kit from sig solar, 6kw,8kwpv,15kwh and for $20k 12kw, 22kwpv,50kwh =10 Jackery's worth of power. Good option for basic power needs, I would use a 10kw gen, charge the Jack 1800w run the 5600w dryer from the gen@75% at the same time. If you plan to stay this time Kenai AK has a used LPG tank retailer. Going off this winter's #'s a 500-gal tank would run my gen for 6 years per fill.
Before we moved off grid, we practiced laundry in our on grid home by loading water in the top in the top load machine. We were absolutely shocked when it took 26 gallons of water. And that doesn't include the rinse cycle.
We found that when we weren't able to run the clothes to the rinse cycle, they ended up with all this…schmoo that took forever to get out of our clothes. We ended up throwing many of our clothes away. Our current washer and dryer is used as the storage pantry in the bathroom. Ha!
Ohio here, my husband has been fooling around with solar and we have three freezers and our well pump hooked up, and if it's cloudy it automatically switches to the grid. We had a cloudy month in Nov and it jumped up from $100 to $400. But that was the first time in two years. I also use solar on my washer and hang my clothes on racks in the laundry room. His next project is to get the whole house on a system like the garage with the freezers.
