Engineers and programmers believe robotic dolphins can replicate the unique connection that happens when people see real life marine mammals like dolphins and sea otters. A marine biologist watches and reacts to footage of the robotic dolphin and explains what it REALLY means, not just for aquariums and conservation, but also for science and conservation.

Full disclosure, I do work with marine mammals who are under human care. These aquatic animals have all been deemed non-releasable by federal agencies such as the Department of Fisheries Canada and the Fisheries Department of the NOAA in the US. The reason why they are non-releasable, and why robotic dolphins will not free any dolphin or whale living in a zoo or aquarium, is because these marine mammals lack the skills to survive in the wild. Either they suffered debilitating injuries that required rescue and rehabilitation, they were rescued at too young of an age and became dependent upon humans, or they were born under human care. Regardless, the outcome is the same. A vast majority of the marine mammals under human care lack the skills to survive in the wild and cannot be safely released without a significant risk to themselves and to humans.
For these marine mammals, such as sea otters and dolphins, the alternative to living under human care is euthanasia. And in my opinion, this is not an option.
