The future holds tremendous promise for scientific research and breakthroughs. AI and other technologies could be truly transformative, but at the same time, dramatic cuts in federal funding and mass layoffs are putting that progress in jeopardy. Dr. Francis Collins helmed the National Institutes of Health for 12 years before he left altogether last March. I can’t think of a better person to help us understand the government’s role in scientific research and the impact the decline in federal support may have from cracking the code for various diseases to drug development to a scientific brain drain.

  1. People need opportunities to get higher degrees. People that do not come from generational wealth. Maybe their GPA is not as high as expected because they had to work multiple jobs the whole time they were in school. There has been a class barrier to higher education for my entire life. People need a hand up and if your generation will give it to us, everything you have spent your lives building will die, and we will all suffer for it. Cancel student loans.

The current administration is causing a massive brain drain of highly talented scientists and engineers to move to a different country.

This government is killing our future.

  7. Wow. Thank you for another thoughtful & informative interview. Dr. Francis Collins was so interesting to listen to. I feel like I came away more aware of what NIH does and the incredible need to use US dollars to keep the scientific echo system alive. I’m calling my representatives today to voice my opinion!!
