These Scrolls Got Destroyed by a Volcano, But It’s Fine
The eruption of Mt Vesuvius buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and one ancient library was burned to a crisp. However, scientists are now using machine learning and AI to decipher the writing on them and recover lost works of ancient philosophy.

The Elder Scorlls VI: Roman Empire
Cool
Our lives have been dominated by primitive parchments for way, WAY too long.
With the power of modern science, and with all of our intelligence combined, we may finally figure out the knowledge that the ancient peoples figured out on their own just by thinking…
All the kids on Tiktok are doing the Vesuvius Challenge
My question did they preserve the scrolls if they couldn't be read? They were brittle, blackened, and seemed completely useless, other than maybe to test their composition or date them. Did someone already understand that science would make them readable someday?
I lost it with the Princess Bride reference.
Epicurean philosophy is still taken seriously.
I get hooked on facts, the search for facts, the verification of facts, and, of course, the disproving of accepted dogma disguised as facts relating to any field of endeavour from floating concrete to reading ancient scrolls.
How am I ever going to sleep again? Ikl exhaust myself to death gatheribg the least coherent, least useful, but coolest collection of seemingly disconnected facts at the crematorium.
It's a fact that I'm now turning off my device to try to sleep enough to find more facts tomorrow. Retirement rules! Never had so much fun on no money. Thanks y'all. Nighty night.😘😅
Yeah, sure they are. To match whichever narrative they want it to fit. Elysium wasn't just a single time command code override, which is why Picard and Data designed a rolling fractal encryption that only a real keymaster can access through their mind's eye.
The experiments with the Borg were horrific. You've never seen the scenes from First Contact where the Queen laughs as she rips the grafts off of Data's skin so that he could experience the process of assimilation like Picard went through.
Coincidentally, you're doing it with my heart and soul here as well.
The Wizard of Oz never offered to help me, even knowing what he knew observing me at USA Volleyball.
This is what AI is great for!! More of this and less of stealing intellectual property please!
Wow! That's so cool. I love the methodology and that they fostered creative solutions shared by the solvers. Also, its great that the prizes don't feel disrespectful and cheap.
The Musk foundation funded this, which is funny since it was rich people libraries to begin with.
This new fuzzy chair is giving such Cool Professor vibes
"…philosophical musings on the subject of pleasure."
Me: GET THOSE SCROLLS TRANSLATED, BOYS AND GIRLS!
Wow this shows the benefits of AI that aren't mentioned much these days!
What was the Common Event?
Even as a kid, I thought it was incredibly sad that hundreds of these scrolls have been destroyed by people thinking they could unroll them
Mostly destroyed is still slightly in tact? Okay, Miracle Max
👍👍👍
Purple is a fruit!
POV: You're in the waiting room at a pediatrician's office, and Reid is talking your ear off.
Have fun storming the labyrinth!
Think they will kill the minotaur?
It would take a miracle…
I watched, recently, the episode of Unearthed which showcased these scrolls. What a fun video to see
This was much, much better than I expected. Thank you for making it detailed and dense with information.
Possible newly discovered Epicurean texts is extremely exciting! Epicurus is my favorite ancient philosopher, but we have very few writings that survived to today.
Inconceivable!
Maybe they finally find the first Pizza recipe.
I love the Princess Bride reference. Mostly dead = slightly alive.
