Re James Spollin, it probably didn't make too much difference that the crime scene wasn't secured because forensic science was in its infancy in the 1850s. This was before even fingerprints being used for identification, let alone DNA. The Dublin police would simply not have been able to do anything with most of the evidence that securing crime scenes is meant to protect.
