The discovery of X-rays is credited to German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895. Roentgen was experimenting with cathode rays, a type of radiation produced by passing an electric current through a vacuum tube, when he noticed that a piece of cardboard coated with a fluorescent material in his lab began to glow even though it was not in the direct path of the cathode rays.
