    Discovery

    Fleming, a Scottish physician-scientist and bacteriologist at St. Mary's Hospital, noticed that a culture plate of Staphylococcus bacteria he left uncovered was contaminated by a fungus, Penicillium notatum. 

     

    Conclusion

    Fleming observed that the area around the mold was clear of bacterial colonies, and concluded that the mold produced chemicals that prevented bacteria from growing. 

     

    Naming

    Fleming named the chemical penicillin after the mold Penicillium notatum. 

     

    Nobel Prize

    Fleming was awarded a share of the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery.
