Terrifying Plane crash at Atlanta Airshow! (2016) Real atc #atc #aviation
On May 14, 2016, about 1647 eastern daylight time, an experimental amateur-built Pitts S-2SW, N24CD, collided with terrain during an aerial display at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK), Atlanta, Georgia. The commercial pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was destroyed by impact forces and a postcrash fire. The airplane was registered to a corporation and was operated by the pilot under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91 as an air show flight. Day, visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident, and no flight plan was filed. The local flight originated from PDK about 1642.
Probable Cause and Findings
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
The pilot’s failure to maintain proper positioning during performance of an aerobatic maneuver and his subsequent failure to discontinue maneuvering when unable to reestablish proper positioning during a steep descent toward the ground

My only guess on this, is he came out of his spiral late, and couldn't pull up fast enough… :(
Airshow pilots always risk their lives when they go up.. Sadly, its simply part of the role they play. They can plan for and have systems in place to keep everyone as safe as possible, but its still a dangerous thing to do.
im only 30 minutes or so from this airport and didnt hear about this. This is news to me and is sad. Anyone know how this ocured or no one knows the ''error'' that led to this?
Imagine taking a sick day off work to see something like this, just to end up being one of the bystanders who were killed during it.

I got photos of Greg doing his last pre-flight. After that, I hopped in my car to head home. A few minutes later word of the crash hit the local radio news. Feels eerie to look at those photos. There one minute, gone the next.
This air boss was the voice of reason and as a cop we appreciate a calm steady voice when our asses are on the line. Rip.

In 2024 we do not need airshows. Everyone knows what a plane looks like. Airshows are dumb. Too many stupid fatalities.

I think it was Greg Connels crash maybe . I know he crashed in Atlanta . Augusta , Ga. Native .
