Solar Panels: Understanding Series & Parallel Connections (Quick Video)

In Series voltage adds up and Amps stay the same
In Parallel voltage stays the same and Amps add up

It is important to stay withing the wattage, voltage and amperage specifications of your charge controller / solar pump controller. If you don’t do this you will damage your solar equipment. This is a very quick video to explain the concept.

  1. I dont know much solar panels but if I have two 100 watts solar panels and I get someone to connect them for me in parallel for usage on my solar generator, after connecting them in parallel will I get a total of 200 watts coming from the sun to charge my solar generator? My solar generator has maximum amp of 8.5. If the amps double after connecting in parallel will this damage my solar generator??

  2. OK, connecting in series I get it…but how do I connect the remaining two wires TO the charge controller. Most charge controllers I'm familiar with do not have a receptacle to directly plug in the MC4 connector. Do I cut off the connectors, strip the wire and then attach them to the controller?

  3. Hi, in layman's language…i have two solar flood lights with two panels but unfortunately one panel died. Can i connect the two lights to the one panel remaining? Thanks, Jay
