Kate Ward also referred to as “Camberley Kate” was born in 1895 in Middleborough; her life story is nothing short of extraordinary, especially for her profound love and advocacy for animals. Kate’s journey into animal advocacy began in 1943 when she rescued a dog. This momentous event marked the beginning of her life’s purpose. From then on, she dedicated herself tirelessly to the cause, traversing the streets of the United Kingdom with her handmade two-wheeled cart, on a mission to rescue stray dogs. By the time of her passing in 1979, Kate had opened her heart and home to at least 600 dogs, as well as several cats. Despite the overwhelming number of animals under her care, Kate remembered each of their stories intimately. She didn’t just provide them with food and shelter; she was also a vocal advocate for leash laws and animal rights.
