  1. Lime mortar goes back from roman times until the discovery of portland cement. The lime was made often from burning limestone, marble being perfect, which is why many roman sites were robbed out during medival times. As mortar is stronger than brick, it was vital. The plumb Bob is still in use today, only being replaced with lasers for buildings demanding extreme accuracy, like steel framed buildings.

  2. We've been using lime in concrete construction since I started as an apprentice in the 60's. I don't know how long before that it was being used. Maybe always, starting with Roman times! While this technique may be new to archaeologists, it's not new around the world.
