Be aware most veterinarians do offer vaccination for leptospirosis, especially in areas where the disease is common. The vaccine is typically recommended for dogs that are at higher risk of exposure, such as those living in areas prone to flooding, those frequently outdoors (hiking, swimming), or in contact with wildlife or livestock.
However, it’s not always a part of the core vaccines that every dog receives, so some vets may not automatically administer it unless requested or deemed necessary based on the dog’s lifestyle or location.
If you’re in a higher-risk area or concerned about potential exposure, it’s a good idea to ask your vet about the leptospirosis vaccine. It’s safe, effective, and can protect your dog from a potentially deadly disease.
However, cats are generally not vaccinated for leptospirosis because they appear to be more resistant to the disease than dogs. Although cats can be exposed to the Leptospira bacteria, they rarely show symptoms or become seriously ill. For this reason, there is no commercially available leptospirosis vaccine for cats.
