Critics on social media question how Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) scans of the Giza pyramids, using satellite radar beams, can detect voids 2 km underground or chambers behind walls, assuming radar can’t penetrate deeply. However, this skepticism misunderstands Filippo Biondi’s method.
Unlike Ground Penetrating Radar, Biondi’s SAR technique uses X-band microwaves (10 GHz, 3 cm wavelength) that barely penetrate the ground (less than 30 cm). Instead, it detects subtle surface movements—shivers—caused by resonating voids deep underground or behind walls.
These shivers, akin to seismic waves, create a Doppler effect that SAR measures with high resolution in distance, direction, and frequency shift. Biondi analyzes these patterns across pixel lines (tomograms) to pinpoint the voids’ locations, tracing the mechanical surface effects back to their subterranean sources.
