Dr. Catherine Musemeche, “Mary Sears and the Marine Scientists Who Helped Win World War II”



On April 20, 2023, the Department of Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and the Forum on Integrated Naval History and Seapower Studies (FINHSS) hosted the 2023 Timothy Ray Lecture during which Dr. Catherine Musemeche discussed her book _Lethal Tides:_ _Mary Sears and the Marine Scientists Who Helped Win World War II._

_Lethal Tides_ tells the story of the relatively unknown Commander Mary Sears, “the first oceanographer of the Navy,” whose groundbreaking oceanographic research helped lead the U.S. to victory in the Pacific theater during World War II.

Dr. Catherine “Kate” Musemeche trained at one of the elite children’s hospitals in the country, Children’s Memorial Hospital of Northwestern University in Chicago and has been a pediatric surgeon for more than three decades. Musemeche also has an MBA from the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico and a JD from the University of Texas School of Law. Musemeche’s first book, _Small,_ was longlisted for the E.O. Wilson/Pen American Literary Science Award and was awarded the Texas Writer’s League Discovery Prize for Nonfiction in 2015. She has also contributed to the New York Times’ “Motherlode” blog, KevinMD.com and EMS World. She lives in Austin, Texas.
