Designing a Solar Energy Tower for the Lunar South Pole @foster-partners
Lunar Tower – Designing a Solar Energy Tower for the Lunar South Pole.
To develop a sustainable presence on the Moon, Mars, and beyond, will require the installation of significant infrastructure, such as power and communications networks. As part of NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I program award, Foster + Partners and Branch Technology are designing and optimizing a 50-metre-tall tower, which could support solar panels to enable power infrastructure for the Lunar South Pole. This short clip visualizes the tower being constructed on the Moon.
A scale model of the tower is on display at the practice’s ‘From Earth to Space and Back’ exhibition at the Kennedy Center, until 13 April 2025. The exhibition—which includes scale models, 3D-printed structures and films—asks visitors to imagine a future where humans have left their footprints on Mars, where the thrill of exploring uncharted worlds is within reach, and where technological advancements in space revolutionize life on Earth.
