Being Digi Sapiens Episode 2 – Connecting with Others | Discovery x Huawei

“Being Digi-Sapiens” is an original documentary series featuring Simone Giertz as she explores the transformative power of digital technology across Europe, with the spontaneity of quirky tech vlogs and the depth of documentary storytelling. Each episode combines insightful interviews, on-the-ground experiments, and a thought-provoking narrative to uncover the transformative impact of technology on the evolution of the sapiens in the digital era, discovering if technology can indeed keep us more connected to ourselves, each other, and the natural world.

Episode 2 reveals the multifaceted ways technology connects us. Simone explores the fusion of Wi-Fi and traditional food markets in Malaga that overcome language barriers, the strengthening of community bonds through rural 5G in Hainfeld, and the integration of robotic co-workers in an Amsterdam logistics centre. This journey showcases technology’s role in fostering human relationships across diverse environments.

  1. "Where do we draw the line?" The reality is that humanity likely never will. Driven by greed, money, and the quest for power, we continue to push the boundaries of technology and resource exploitation, often ignoring the long-term consequences. Despite clear warnings of environmental collapse, like the depletion of the ozone layer and accelerating climate change, meaningful action is frequently delayed because it threatens economic interests and established power structures. Humans fail to understand just how fragile the thin layer of atmosphere that protects us truly is. This atmosphere is the only barrier between our fake, constructed, artificial world and complete annihilation. Instead of recognizing this vulnerability, we keep pushing forward, exploiting the Earth's resources to the brink. In our ignorance and pursuit of short-term gains, we risk actions so drastic, like drilling deep into the Earth, that we could end up causing our own destruction, completely unaware of the catastrophe we're edging toward, moon dust.

  2. I really want to love this; it's hard not to have a great video with Simone in it.

I'm quite troubled to see so much placement and silent advertisement for Huawei, without some contextualization of the relationship between Huawei and the producers.
