Despite some experimental titles, Rovio’s 2012 campaign was one to remember featuring record downloads, merchandise sales, new animations, and of course a handful of the most memorable games in franchise history. Rovio had raised the bar so high that no matter what they did in the following year, it simply could not match their prior success. However, it wasn’t for lack of trying, because 2013’s flagships would prove to be the most innovative games yet, especially the topic of today’s video. Angry Birds Go! Was Rovio’s first major deviation from the traditional Angry Birds format, taking the iconic characters and placing them in a carefully-crafted kart racer. To this day, fans look back on this title with wistful nostalgia and the Telepods that were inextricably linked to it. However, while everybody was focused on Hasbro’s QR-coded figures, Commonwealth Toy & Novelty was hard at work on a line of plushies set to coincide with Go!’s release. This reality was not meant to be, as merchandise sales waned due to plummeting interest in the franchise, and the line was scrapped mid-development. For nearly a decade, the Angry Birds plush cognescenti was completely unaware of any of this, but that all changed due to a series of discoveries in 2021. While that moment was exciting, it left collectors like me yearning for answers. Is there any more information out there? What happened to the samples? Why was the line cancelled? Two years later, I have all the answers, and so much more. So let’s “GO!” look back at the now infamous Angry Birds Go! development line, covering every aspect imaginable, including an in-depth showcase of the never-before-seen items themselves.
