Amelia Earhart was executed for spying on the Japanese for the Americans, during Japan's military expansion of the Pacific, before the U.S. entered World War Two.
At the end of the war, when the United States took control of the Japanese military base where Earhart's plane was held, the plane was destroyed by agents of the American government and its remains staged to look as though Earhart and her navigator died after running out of fuel at sea.
This theory is supported by telegram messages, photographs, and eye witness accounts that were recorded on film and print.
