My theory is that toepicks green gas coming off its cage helmet must be some sort of fear toxin that developed within the aliens body
and the individuals that see is not the face of a monstrous beast but faces of what they each fear (whether it be past traumas, their predators etc)
i believe this toxin developing within the body is a defensive mechanisms from being targeted by lots of predators that it creates some sort of liquid that evaporates into a gas that has psychological effects that increase fear paranoia perhaps gives them this unnerving feeling with adrenaline increase..
