Joao Pedro de Magalhaes | The Scientific Quest for Immortality: Prospects in aging and cryopreservation
Joao Pedro de Magalhaes: “I am a scientist originally from Porto in Portugal but have lived in Belgium and in the US (Boston), and Iโm also of Spanish ancestry. Following training at Harvard Medical School, I am now a Professor at the University of Birmingham in England. My lab studies aging and longevity using a combination of data-driven approaches and cellular and molecular methods. As detailed on my senescence.info website dedicated to the biology of aging, I would ultimately like my work to help people live longer, healthier lives by manipulating the human aging process.
I have published over 100 scientific papers, including in top journals (e.g., Science, Natureโ and Cell-family journals), and have given over 100 invited talks, including a TEDx talk on the genetics of aging. My research and I have been widely featured in scientific outlets (Science, Scientific American, New Scientist, etc.) and in the popular press (BBC, CNN, Time magazine, the Financial Times and many others). In addition, I have published several articles in popular science magazines (e.g., The Scientist and The Futurist).”

I love the boldness of this quest
Sir,if you ar not able to achieve immortality during your lifespan, I kavin, shall thy take over from you and achieve the result during my life.๐ซก
".. maybe life can have a happy ending" ๐
Esto serรญa maravilloso para toda la humanidad porque si fuese Haci tendrรญas que asumir la perdida de seres queridos ๐ข
Hey Allison ๐๐๏ธ
Your relativity on Dinosaur and rest of the mammals age is as revolutionary as Darwin Theory. You should be accorded Nobel if proved factually evidently. Darwin Thoery being transcendental is as fake as humans evolved from apes due to Pagan Hindu Belief System
Bryan Johnson, Blueprint AI will soon take the guess work out of it and all gurus and snake oil salesmen will soon be gone. See you in 2500
No se le ve muy esperanzado con este รกnimo no veo a nadie por muy inteligente que sea descubrir nada
he doesn't think in terms of A.I.
What do cryopreservers hope to achieve? When you unthaw, you pick up at the same age that you were when you were frozen.
I am technically obese: 235 pounds, 5 foot 11 inches, male. I asked to be put on Wegovy to help me lose weight, but Medicare says they don't cover weight loss nor weight gain drugs. I believe the reason for not covering Wegovy is they need to save it for diabetes patients. I do not have diabetes. On an unrelated topic, I am an Antinatalist Animal Rights Vegan (AARV).
free up the animal spirit of capitalism by restricting FDA to only phase 1 approvals. after that companies can sell their products. with real time diagnosis and easy ways to keep track of big data , cheap medicine and anti aging will boom. Cures for aging will come within a decade.
Human aging has been reversed by as much as 10 yrs. in multiple ways. I'm not sure why a supposedly educated speaker wouldn't know that. Unless, of course, he is invested in cryonics and the purpose of this video is to sell people on cryonics. Many expect that life extension escape velocity will be reached in the next 10 years.
๐งฌ
He has money in cryopreservation and he needs to sell that money in aging is a nonsense, but it is almost ridiculous his point, who wantโs to be cryopreservated? come on, no one is going to come to live after that, people has died for something, he is not cryopreservating young healthy people.
Interesting but he is far more pessimistic than a lot of other researchers in the field. Maybe the other researchers are optimistic to help boost funding for their research? I would like to err on the optimists side.
You canโt be upset with someone for having doubts and being realistic when they are as influential, hardworking and kind as this guy has been for this field. A hero in my book
Some key points:
– We do not know why we age (~6:45)
– Will aging be cured in our lifetimes? In his estimation: no (~28:00)
He presented a variation of the same slides at the Biostasis 2022 meeting in late October last year, with the same core message (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uv54dr6Kmg: 3:59:08: "Will ageing be cured in our lifetime? … No").
I feel he lacks vision and the drive..I believe we will have longevity escape velocity by 2035 and therapeutics to slow aging to a snails pace by 2028 and we already essentially have it now but its not mainstream yet..2-3 years it will
He has a much more pessimistic outlook than someone like Aubrey, would be interesting to see them talk.
