A few months ago, Hollywood was on fire, and just days before, on November 6, a 10-foot Oarfish washed up on California’s shores—a rare event, as they’ve been spotted only 15–20 times in 125 years. Shortly after, a 7-magnitude earthquake hit California.

Similarly, in 2017, Oarfish sightings in the Philippines preceded a 6.6-magnitude earthquake. In Japan, before the catastrophic 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake (9.1 magnitude), Oarfish sightings spiked near Fukushima, leading to their nickname “doomsday fish.”

Oarfish and creatures like Angler Fish, usually found deep in the ocean, are being found near the surface, raising the question—can sea creatures sense impending disasters? While over 80% of our oceans remain unexplored, the mysteries of these creatures might hold the answers.
