Alexander Fleming is credited with discovering penicillin, the world's first antibiotic, in 1928:

Discovery
Fleming, a Scottish physician-scientist and bacteriologist at St. Mary's Hospital, noticed that a culture plate of Staphylococcus bacteria he left uncovered was contaminated by a fungus, Penicillium notatum.

Conclusion
Fleming observed that the area around the mold was clear of bacterial colonies, and concluded that the mold produced chemicals that prevented bacteria from growing.

Naming
Fleming named the chemical penicillin after the mold Penicillium notatum.

Nobel Prize
Fleming was awarded a share of the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery.
