  2. will apophis hit earth? In case you didn't know, an asteroid named Apophis will pass 30,600 kilometers from Earth on april 13,2029 and yes that's Friday the 13th. To give you an idea of how close that is. The moon is 382,500 kilometers away from Earth. Apophis will only not pass much closer than the moon, but also closer than our geostationary communications satellites. And it's not small It's about 450 meters across. It would fit neatly inside the battery a park at the tip of Manhattan in New York City. Thanks to planetary defender around the world, they've been able to determine that Apophis won't hit Earth at least anytime Soon. Close calls like this remind us why planetary defense is so important.
