Well, it certainly wasn't discovered. It was conceived. It's an idea with no proof, so not discovered. Dark matter, as I understand it with my infantile mind, is really just a place holder for an explanation for why the universe acts as it does. When we have a better understanding that can be demonstrated to be true, then dark matter will go the way of aether.
