2024 Rev. Carrier Science Medal Ceremony and Lecture with Michael Levitt, Ph.D.

Michael Levitt, Ph.D., a professor of structural biology at Stanford University, won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He received the Rev. Carrier Science Medal from the University of Notre Dame for his groundbreaking work in developing accurate computer models of chemical reactions, integrating features of both classical physics and quantum mechanics.

His lecture focuses on the fusion of the three types of intelligence: biological intelligence, human intelligence and artificial intelligence. His talk, titled, “Multidisciplinary Revolution in Biology and Artificial Intelligence,” describes how AI and computational biology have revolutionized our approach to disease, making drug development faster and more cost-effective. Levitt also underscores the critical role of multidisciplinary collaboration that will drive the next revolution in biology and AI.

Following the lecture, Levitt participates in a fireside chat with Kate Biberdorf, the professor for the public understanding of science at Notre Dame (and popularly known as Kate the Chemist).

The Rev. Joseph Carrier C.S.C. Science Medal is the most prestigious award presented by the College of Science, and is given for sustained, outstanding achievements in any field of science. It is awarded annually, alternating between the mathematical, physical, chemical, and biological sciences.
