I suspect the spirals, and their cousins, the labyrinths (NOT mazes), will ultimately be shown to have astronomical significance. Considering that the Earth following the Sun through its path follows not just a circular or elliptical path, but an elongated spiral path through space. And since the skies were more active before the advent of the Holocene, I'd surmise that earlier civilizations saw a LOT more going on in the sky than we do today. This could account for the spirals, labyrinths, menhirs (emergency shelters during meteor showers?), the prevalence of pyramids, and megalithic/cyclopean architecture. It would also account for legends of the gods (notably the Greeks).
