In this groundbreaking video, we present the first confirmed live observation of the colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, in its natural habitat. Filmed at a depth of approximately 600 meters near the South Sandwich Islands, this remarkable footage was captured by the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s remotely operated vehicle, SuBastian, during a collaborative expedition with Ocean Census. The young squid, measuring 30 centimeters (about one foot), offers a rare glimpse into the life of this enigmatic species, which was first described in 1925 based on partial specimens found in a sperm whale’s stomach. Despite its long history in scientific literature, this is the first time a living colossal squid has been documented on film. Join Dr. Kat Bolstad, an associate professor at Auckland University of Technology, as she narrates this extraordinary discovery and discusses the ecological significance of the colossal squid, its predators, and its potential size.
