When we think of ancient universities like Taxila, we often picture philosophy, astronomy, or medicine being taught. But what if we told you that chemistry was also an advanced discipline in ancient India? Excavations at Taxila have unearthed laboratory vessels, producing evidence that our ancestors conducted chemical experiments centuries ago!
Renowned scientist Prafulla Chandra Ray documented this in his book A History of Hindu Chemistry, where he highlights India’s long-standing expertise in metallurgy, pharmaceuticals, and chemical sciences. These discoveries challenge the colonial-era myth that scientific advancements were exclusive to the West.
From extracting metals to complex formulations in Ayurveda, ancient Indian chemists were far ahead of their time. Yet, much of this knowledge remains buried, both in the ground and in forgotten texts. It’s time to reclaim our true scientific legacy!
