“JOCELYN BELL BURNELL : THE UNSUNG HERO OF PULSAR DISCOVERIES..”

Pulsars were discovered by astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell and her advisor, Antony Hewish, in 1967. While they were conducting a survey of radio waves from space, they detected regular pulses of radio emissions that were later identified as coming from rotating neutron stars. Bell Burnell’s work was crucial in the identification of these objects, which were named “pulsars” (short for pulsating stars). For their contributions, Hewish was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974, while Bell Burnell was not included in the prize, a decision that has been widely discussed and debated in the scientific community.
