– At the start of the 20th century, a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis meant certain death. While starvation diets were used to delay symptoms, patients ultimately succumbed to the disease.

– On May 17, 1921, Frederick Banting and Charles Best, guided by J. J. R. Macleod at the University of Toronto, successfully isolated insulin.

– James Collip later refined the extract to make it safe for human use.

– Their first successful trial was conducted on 13-year-old Leonard Thompson, leading to a discovery that would save millions of lives.
